One of the few fun things about culture war, in my opinion, is how every available territory gets crammed into this absurd dualistic framework so that people can fight about it, resulting in a fascinating assortment of mystic correspondences.

From a sufficiently advanced perspective, all of the following distinctions collapse into a single bit:

Women vs. Men
Hunanities vs. Sciences
Democrats vs. Republicans
Easy video games vs. Difficult video games
Trans people vs. Cis people
Communists vs. Fascists
Black people vs. White people
Literary fiction vs. Genre fiction
Young people vs. Old people
Disabled people vs. Abled people
Tumblr vs. Reddit
Gay people vs. Straight people
American children’s cartoons vs. Anime
Slavenmoral vs. Herrenmoral
Censorship vs. Free speech
Spirituality vs. Hard atheism
Choice-based interactive fiction vs. Parser-based interactive fiction
Secularism vs. Christianity
Poor people vs. Rich people
Relativism vs. Positivism

Any seeming contradictions in these coalitions/basic ontological categories is purely your imagination.

I scored 9 on one side, 9 on the other and 2 I have no idea.

  • L Women vs. Men

I’m gonna guess based on:

American children’s cartoons vs. Anime
(?? Slavenmoral vs. Herrenmoral ??)
Spirituality vs. Hard atheism
Choice-based interactive fiction vs. Parser-based interactive fiction

that this is sarcastic. I’ve yet to see any sustained-for-any-reasonable-time complete cramming of “American children’s cartoons vs. Anime” (there was like that one month, maybe…) into anywhere near the same binary as, e.g., “Woman vs. Men”, and I’ve flat-out never seen either of the other two even argued as opposites (especially not moral opposites? Unless you mean something REALLY different for “spirituality”…).

(”Slavenmoral vs. Herrenmoral” I’ve just never heard of, but from a quick web search which only turned up “Herrenmoral” as “master+morality”, introduced by some philosopher, it looks like this is a classic, deliberately-basically-one-bit dichotomy and also not one discussed very much in the same fights as the others. But I really, really, don’t know, so I’m just leaving it in (??)s and not using it to back my thinking.)

So yeah. I could be totally wrong, but I’m gonna go with sarcastic, maybe trolling, for this.

Oh, it’s definitely not 100% sincere, we’re just taking the survey anyway.

Slavenmoral vs Herrenmoral didn’t get search results because the first term wants to be spelled Sklavenmoral. It’s Nietzsche stuff, see here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master%E2%80%93slave_morality. AFAIK, both of them are interesting summaries of phenomena but not actually systems you should use for decision-making. Or even identify with, probably. IIRC, Nietzche sounded like he favored the latter, but that might just be because he published a book about how the former sucked that was supposed to be part of a series but then he died? IDK, though.

11 Left, 9 Right, opting out is for the weak. I shall take this ridiculous one-bit framework and bend it to my own will by actualizing myself even within its constraints and defying the very foundations of it.

There are the answers, survey-maker. You may ask them to do whatever you wish. I remain free.

Working at LUSH: the saga

I have had men some into a store I used to work at asking if “this hairspray will work on men” and when I said yes they said “but it’s purple”

My whole life!

A man walks into a store to buy shampoo. He walks down the hair care aisle and spots a pink shampoo bottle that promises to give you luscious locks. The man is determined, for his hair lacks luster. He asks the nearest store clerk, “Will this work for men? It’s pink, so I’m not sure.” The store clerk looks at the man, then at the shampoo. He shrugs his shoulders in ignorance. The man resolves to purchase the shampoo anyway.

After arriving at his humble abode, the man takes a shower with his new shampoo. He opens the bottle and tries to pour the soapy substance into his hand, but alas; the shampoo refuses to fall onto his manly skin.

The man crumples down in utter defeat, sobbing as the shower water softly cascades down his rippling shoulders. The shampoo will never work for him, for he is a man, and the shampoo he bought is unfortunately in a pink bottle. “I should have known,” he cries out in a whimper. “I should have known.”

I originally thought this was the Mentally Infected By Stereotyped Persona Associated With Headwear meme.

Okay but sometimes men’s and women’s products have actual differences that might not be obvious? Like, remember that big post complaining about how men’s razors cost less than women’s? That’s because they perform differently. Women’s shoes are usually designed for people with wider hips. Et cetera. It’s not obvious that there wouldn’t be a difference between men’s and women’s shampoos (is there? I genuinely have no idea and I’m too lazy to google). And of course don’t forget that men might face social punishment for smelling like fruity shampoo, no matter how silly those punishments may be.

do you have link for the thing you said about razors? b/c for the past couple of years, I’ve been intermittently using men’s razors and I have found that they perform better, if anything?

http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2014/10/really-difference-mens-womens-razors-shaving-creams/

Inch for inch on material, women’s clothing typically costs more than men’s.

This is partially because tariffs on men’s and women’s clothing products often differ, with women’s being taxed at higher rates.

This… this…

What are the rules of challenging someone to a duel? I demand satisfaction from Azathoth.

that’s the eastern continent in Warcraft right? i don’t think you can challenge landmasses to duels under any rules. even Caligula only attacked the ocean

I don’t know if you’re kidding about not knowing but the place in WoW is Azeroth. Azathoth is the rationalist personification of evolution.

You’re thinking of Azathoth. Azathoth is… okay, it actually is the rationalist personification of evolution.

Bioethicists: Life extension is evil.
Bioethicists: Rendering disabled kids permanently prepubescent? No biggie.

> “I’ve been shocked by how the disabled community has reacted to it,” she says. “These people speak of the ‘perspective of the disability community’ as though we are not part of it. It makes us feel disenfranchised by the very organizations that were put in place to protect Jessica and our family.”

Gee, neurotypical physically-abled woman, I can’t imagine why that would be.

> She finally brought it up with her husband, Matt, when Ricky was about 2.

So, you’ve determined with a two-year-old that they’ll almost certainly never be capable of wanting puberty. Gee, that sounds reliable.

> Like Ashley’s parents, she believed that if her daughter had no breasts, she would be less likely to be a target of sexual abuse.

…okay, I can follow the reasoning, but gah.

original post

Why do you think bioethicists think life extension is evil? Obviously there are individual bioethicists who do, but is there a reason to think the majority does?

“ is there a reason to think the majority does?” Not that I know of, I’m just being unfair.

The only reason bioethicists would exist is to express that life extension is evil. If someone does not wish to exert control upon another’s body, they don’t need to make up a profession to write long and elaborate arguments on the topic, they just refrain from using coercion and fraud against them or advocating for the use of such by someone else. Thus, bioethicists commenting on what people do to their own bodies can only have emerged from a desire to prevent, to stop, to crush, to destroy those who dissent against the herd, for no other motivation necessitates their existence, and therefore it is imperative for any self-respecting autonomous human being to scorn dem like the oppressive moochers and parasites they are, feasting on the lifeblood and suffering of innovative value-creators, early adopters, biohackers, and transhumanists.
